Enzymes
Enzymes act as biocatalysts, i.e. they accelerate chemical reactions.
Where are enzymes used?
They are used to enable processes such as DNA replication, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and RNA synthesis. This makes enzymes indispensable tools for research into proteins, genes and cellular processes. They provide crucial insights into the mechanisms that control life in organisms.
Why are enzymes important?
Enzymes reduce the activation energy, which considerably increases the reaction rate. This enables reactions that would not take place or would take place much more slowly without the enzyme.
